About Dr. Ankur Barua
Dr. Ankur Barua is a highly skilled Consultant Eye Surgeon with a passion for precision in cataract, refractive, and corneal surgeries. He earned his medical degree from Manchester Medical School, where he also undertook a double honours ophthalmology clerkship at Harvard Medical School. His postgraduate education includes a Master’s in Medical Law and Ethics, and he has completed specialist training in both Cornea and Glaucoma.
Following his completion of CCT, Dr. Barua pursued an advanced fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the Corneoplastics Unit, QVH, East Grinstead. He has held significant roles, including a locum consultant position at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, before moving to the Midlands as the substantive corneal service lead in Coventry. He is now a consultant at Birmingham Midland Eye Centre, where he was the first in the region to offer DMEK surgery and has spearheaded national training in this technique. His work has been recognised with numerous nominations, including for Trainer of the Year and the Compassion in Care segment of the Outstanding Service and Care Awards.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Barua is a dedicated educator, serving as an undergraduate tutor and leading instructional courses at major conferences. His commitment to advancing ophthalmology extends beyond the UK, with charity work in developing countries like Cambodia.
EXPERIENCE
Dr. Ankur Barua, with over 10 years of experience in cataract, corneal, and refractive surgery, was the first corneal consultant in the Birmingham region to offer DMEK surgery. He has been instrumental in developing and introducing keratoconus pathways in Coventry and Warwickshire, significantly advancing patient care. As a published author of multiple peer-reviewed articles and a book chapter on paediatric keratoconus, Dr. Barua brings both expertise and innovation to his field. He has extensive experience in performing complex anterior segment surgeries, including corneal transplants and high-risk cataract surgeries. Additionally, Dr. Barua is a trainer and examiner in various national and international courses.
